Visa Requirements for Fiji: What You Need to Know

Most visitors to Fiji enjoy visa-free access for short-term stays, with citizens of over 110 countries able to enter without a pre-arranged visa for tourism or business purposes for stays up to four months. Eligible nationals receive a free Visitors Permit on arrival; citizens of non-exempt countries must obtain a Visitor Visa before travel — there is no visa on arrival for non-exempt nationalities. Requirements vary based on your nationality and travel purpose.

Visa-Free Countries and Duration

Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Canada, and United States can enter visa-free for up to 4 months, receiving a Visitors Permit on arrival at no cost.

All European Union member states receive 4 months visa-free access, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, and other EU member states.

Japan, Philippines, and China passport holders also benefit from visa-free entry. South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Brazil, Chile, and Argentina citizens receive visa-free access as well.

India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and South Africa passport holders are among the visa-exempted nationalities. Russia also receives visa-free access to Fiji.

Essential Entry Requirements

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended period of stay
  • Minimum one blank page for entry stamp
  • Confirmed onward or return ticket
  • Proof of sufficient funds to cover your stay in Fiji
  • Completed Fiji Passenger Arrival Card (provided by airline or shipping agent before landing; one card per traveler, including children)

Visa Required Nationalities

Travelers from non-exempt countries must apply for a Visitor Visa prior to travel. Countries whose citizens require a pre-arranged visa include Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Somalia, and Syria, as well as several other Asian and Middle Eastern nations. Pakistani citizens, for example, must apply for a single-entry Visitor Visa (FJD 95.10, approximately USD 43) at the nearest Fiji diplomatic mission or online via the ImmiHub Portal.

Transit and Special Cases

For non-exempt nationals, no transit visa is required if the transit period is 3 hours or less, provided they hold a valid onward ticket and satisfy the entry requirements of their final destination. If the transit period exceeds 3 hours, standard Visitor Visa requirements apply. Transit passengers must hold a valid outward ticket departing within 72 hours of arrival in Fiji. You can stay within the airport for up to 10 hours to connect to another flight or check into a hotel if you stay overnight.

Important: Visa policies change frequently. Always verify current requirements through official Fiji Immigration (immigration.gov.fj) or your nearest Fiji diplomatic mission before traveling.

03

Fiji Visa Categories and Types

Fiji offers diverse visa categories designed to accommodate various travel purposes and durations. Understanding the specific visa type requirements ensures proper application submission and successful travel authorization.

Tourist and Visitor Visas

Single-entry Tourist Visa is valid for 3 months from date of issue and allows one single entry into Fiji, with a maximum stay of 4 months. Multiple-entry Tourist Visa is valid for 12 months from date of issue and allows multiple entries into Fiji, with each stay not exceeding 4 months. Citizens from over 110 countries can travel to Fiji visa-free for tourism purposes and stay up to 4 months.

  • Single-entry tourist visa (3-month validity, up to 4-month stay)
  • Multiple-entry tourist visa (12-month validity, maximum 4 months per entry)
  • Extension possibilities up to 6 months total

A single-entry visa costs FJD 95.10 (approximately USD 42), and a multiple-entry visa costs FJD 189.15 (approximately USD 83). Processing typically takes 14 working days from the date of receipt by the Visa Officer.

Business and Work Visas

Business visas may be granted for visiting friends or families, holiday, business purposes, transit purposes for more than three hours, or joining a vessel as crew or passenger. Short-term business visitor permits are granted for up to 14 days for activities including conference participation and investment consultations.

Long-term work permits in Fiji have a duration of three years and are issued to non-citizens for employment. Short-term work permits are valid for one year or less and are granted to non-citizens for temporary engagements. Application fees of FJD 650.05 (approximately USD 286) apply for educational and religious purposes work permits. Foreigners on visitor permits are not allowed to apply for work permits while in the country and must depart Fiji before lodging a work permit application.

Regulatory update (April 2025): Effective 23 April 2025, the Fiji Ministry of Immigration directed that all work permit applications must be processed strictly under the Immigration Act 2003 and its regulations. Applications previously accepted under the Qualified Employers (QE) and Skilled Professionals Evaluation Committee (SPEC) frameworks are no longer accepted.

Student and Academic Visas

Student visa applications require educational institution acceptance letters, financial proof, and health examinations. Endorsement from relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Education and Fiji Higher Education Commission, is required. Academic exchange programs qualify for special processing considerations with expedited timelines where applicable.

Transit and Special Categories

Transit visa permits airport connections up to 72 hours with a valid outward ticket. You can stay within the airport for up to 10 hours to connect to another flight or check into a hotel if staying overnight. Diplomatic and official visas require government sponsorship and advance coordination through embassy channels.

Visas may also be granted to representatives of foreign governments and their relatives. Family reunion visas accommodate spouse, dependent, and relative categories with varying documentation requirements and processing periods ranging from 14 working days.

Step-by-Step Fiji Visa Application Process

Step 1: Determine Your Visa Category

Identify the correct visa type based on your travel purpose, duration, and nationality. Tourist visas suit short-term visits up to 4 months, while business or work permits require additional documentation. Check whether your nationality requires a visa by consulting the official Fiji Immigration website, as citizens from over 110 countries enjoy visa-free entry.

Step 2: Gather Required Documentation

Compile essential documents including:

  • Valid passport with minimum 6 months validity beyond intended stay
  • Completed application form with accurate information
  • Three recent passport-sized photographs (less than 6 months old, color, full-face view against plain or light-colored background)
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking or sponsor letter from family or friends with their valid ID)
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Financial statements demonstrating sufficient funds (recent bank statements or credit cards)
  • Proof of approved visa and onward ticket if traveling to another country requiring a visa

Ensure all documents not originally in English are translated by certified registered translators.

Step 3: Complete Application Forms

Access official application forms through the Fiji Immigration Department website. Fiji has implemented an online visa application system called ImmiHub Portal, allowing you to submit applications digitally. Fill out forms completely, ensuring consistency across all documents. Double-check personal details, travel dates, and contact information before submission. Applications must be submitted by persons over 18 years of age.

Step 4: Submit Application Online or In-Person

You can submit your application through two channels: online via the Fiji Immigration ImmiHub Portal or in person at Fiji Immigration Department offices in Suva, Nadi, Lautoka, Savusavu, Levuka, or Labasa. Applications can also be lodged at Fiji embassies, consulates, or diplomatic missions abroad. If applying in person, schedule an appointment where required. Biometric data collection is not routinely required for Fiji visa applications, though photographs meeting specific standards must be provided.

Step 5: Pay Processing Fees

Processing fees vary by visa type. A single-entry visa costs FJD 95.10 (approximately USD 43), while a multiple-entry visa costs FJD 189.15 (approximately USD 85). Online applications allow you to pay visa fees electronically through secure payment portals, eliminating the need to visit a bank. Accepted payment methods include credit cards and bank transfers. Retain payment receipts for application tracking purposes.

Step 6: Track Application Progress

Monitor application status through the online tracking system using reference numbers provided upon submission. You will receive updates via email throughout the processing period. Processing times typically range from 14 working days from the date the application is received by the visa officer. Delays may occur when applications are incomplete or when additional documentation or verification is required.

Step 7: Collect Your Visa

Receive notification when processing completes. If you applied through an embassy or consulate, collect approved visas in person or through authorized representatives from the same location. For online applications, the visa is endorsed on your passport, or a visa approval letter is sent electronically notifying you of the approval, validity period, and authorized duration of stay. Review visa details carefully for accuracy before travel, including validity dates and entry conditions. Apply at least 3 months before your planned travel date.

Fiji Visa on Arrival: Visitors Permit for Exempt Nationals

Fiji does not operate a conventional visa on arrival scheme open to all nationalities. Instead, the country uses a two-track system: citizens of visa-exempt nations receive a free Visitors Permit on arrival, while citizens of non-exempt nations must secure a Visitor Visa before departure. Understanding this distinction prevents confusion at the airport and helps travelers plan and budget correctly.

Visitors Permit on Arrival (Exempt Nationals)

Citizens of more than 110 exempt countries — including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United States, all EU member states, the United Kingdom, Japan, China, India, South Korea, Brazil, Malaysia, Singapore, Russia, Bangladesh, Nigeria, and many others — receive a Visitors Permit stamped in their passport free of charge at the point of entry. No prior application or fee is required.

  • Cost: Free — no fee payable at the border or in advance
  • Authorized stay: up to 4 months per entry
  • Extension: one extension of up to 2 months is possible (total maximum stay 6 months); apply at a Fiji Immigration office before the permit expires; extension fee FJD 93
  • Entry points: Nadi International Airport, Suva (Nausori Airport), or approved seaports

No Visa on Arrival for Non-Exempt Nationals

Citizens of non-exempt countries — such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, and Syria — cannot obtain any form of visa at Fiji's ports of entry. All non-exempt travelers must arrange a Visitor Visa before travel, either online through the Fiji Immigration ImmiHub Portal or at a Fiji embassy, high commission, or consulate abroad. Arriving at the border without a valid pre-arranged visa results in denied entry and return at the traveler's expense.

What You Need on Arrival (All Travelers)

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity beyond intended stay)
  • Completed Fiji Passenger Arrival Card (distributed by the airline or ship crew before landing — one card per traveler, including children)
  • Confirmed onward or return ticket
  • Proof of accommodation in Fiji (hotel booking or sponsor letter with host's valid ID)
  • Proof of sufficient funds for the intended duration of stay
  • Visitor Visa, if your nationality is non-exempt (must be pre-arranged before travel)

Fiji Visa on Arrival: Cost Summary

  • Exempt nationals — Visitors Permit on arrival: FJD 0 (no charge)
  • Non-exempt nationals — no visa on arrival available; pre-arranged single-entry Visitor Visa: FJD 95.10 (approximately USD 43)
  • Non-exempt nationals — pre-arranged multiple-entry Visitor Visa: FJD 189.15 (approximately USD 85)
  • Permit extension applied in-country before expiry: FJD 93

Always confirm your nationality's exempt status via the official Fiji Immigration website before travel, as the exempted countries list is subject to change.

07

Fiji Transit Visa Requirements

Fiji's Nadi International Airport is a major Pacific hub and a common connection point on routes between Australasia, North America, and Pacific island nations. Transit rules depend on your nationality (exempt or non-exempt) and the length of your layover.

Transit for Visa-Exempt Nationals

If your country appears on Fiji's official visa-exempt list, you may transit through Fiji without additional visa arrangements. You receive a standard Visitors Permit on arrival, which covers your transit period within the authorized stay. Standard entry requirements still apply: valid passport, completed Fiji Passenger Arrival Card, and a confirmed onward ticket departing within 72 hours of your arrival.

Transit for Non-Exempt Nationals

Citizens of non-exempt countries must observe the following rules:

  • Transit of 3 hours or less: no transit visa is required, provided you hold a valid onward ticket and satisfy the entry requirements of your final destination country.
  • Transit exceeding 3 hours: standard Fiji Visitor Visa requirements apply; a visa cannot be issued at the border and must be obtained before travel.

Required Documents for Transit

  • Valid passport (minimum 6 months validity)
  • Confirmed onward ticket departing within 72 hours of your arrival in Fiji
  • Proof of valid visa or entry permit for the final destination country, where required by that country
  • Completed Fiji Passenger Arrival Card
  • Pre-arranged Visitor Visa for Fiji, if your transit period exceeds 3 hours and your nationality is non-exempt

Applying for a Fiji Transit Visa Online

Non-exempt nationals whose layover exceeds 3 hours must obtain a Visitor Visa before travel. Applications can be submitted online through the Fiji Immigration ImmiHub Portal or at a Fiji embassy or high commission. Select transit as the purpose of visit when completing the form. The standard fee applies: FJD 95.10 for a single-entry Visitor Visa (approximately USD 43). Processing takes approximately 14 working days; apply well in advance of your travel date to avoid complications.

Overnight Layovers and Airport Stays

Transit passengers may remain airside at Nadi International Airport for up to 10 hours to connect to an onward flight. For overnight layovers requiring accommodation outside the terminal, a valid Visitors Permit (exempt nationals) or pre-arranged Visitor Visa (non-exempt nationals) is required. Given Fiji's position on trans-Pacific routes, it is a popular overnight stopover destination; securing transit documentation well in advance is strongly recommended.
