El Salvador offers multiple visa categories designed to accommodate diverse travel purposes, each with specific requirements and validity periods tailored to your intended activities.
Tourist and Visitor Visas
Tourist visas serve short-term leisure travelers with validity periods typically up to 180 days for visa-exempt nationals from approximately 100 countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and EU nations. Visa-exempt visitors must purchase a Tourist Card for $12 USD upon arrival. You can utilize the CA-4 agreement, which allows free movement between Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador, with a visa issued by one of the four countries honored by all four members. The immigration officer at your first entry point into the CA-4 region determines the exact length of your authorized stay, up to 90 days within the CA-4 area.
Business Visa Categories
Professional travelers require business visas for:
- Commercial meetings and negotiations
- Conference attendance and trade exhibitions
- Investment exploration activities
- Contract negotiations and partnerships
Visa-exempt nationals who travel frequently for business can apply for a Frequent Traveler Card valid for up to three years, allowing multiple entries with up to 90 days of stay on each entry without paying the tourist card fee. Many applicants can now use El Salvador's online eVisa system rather than applying only through an embassy.
Work and Employment Visas
Work authorization visas require employer sponsorship, with work permits combined with temporary residency permits valid for an initial period of 1 to 2 years and extendable for up to 5 years. The work permit process typically takes 2 to 4 weeks, with common categories including Temporary Work Visa and Employment Visa for skilled workers. Processing time for obtaining a work permit after filing the application ranges from 3 to 4 months, though processing timelines may vary from 30 to 45 days depending on the consulate.
Student and Academic Visas
Educational visas support enrolled students at recognized institutions, requiring acceptance letters and financial proof. Academics or teachers can obtain residence permits with a maximum duration of one year. Scientists and specialized personnel engaged in academic, research, technical, or consulting activities may receive permits for up to two years. Student visas align with academic program duration and may permit specific employment under certain conditions.
Digital Nomad Visa
El Salvador introduced a Digital Nomad Visa that allows remote workers to stay for up to 2 years, provided they meet income requirements from foreign sources. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum monthly income of $1,460 USD to qualify. The minimum income requirement increases to six months of minimum wage or $2,190 USD per month for digital nomads accompanied by two or more persons. Digital Nomad status does not allow local employment.
Transit and Multiple-Entry Options
Transit visas accommodate travelers passing through El Salvador en route to final destinations, with transit without a visa allowed for up to 48 hours for travelers holding onward tickets. Multiple-entry visas benefit frequent travelers, offering repeated entries within specified timeframes.
Special Categories
Holders of diplomatic, official, or service passports from numerous countries including Belarus, Cuba, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Morocco, Pakistan, Philippines, Serbia, Thailand, Venezuela, and Vietnam do not require a visa. Family reunion visas facilitate visits to Salvadoran residents and citizens with extended validity options. Citizens from Central American countries can apply directly for permanent residency, while individuals from Spain, Latin America, and other Spanish-speaking countries can obtain permanent residence after 1 year of holding a temporary residence permit.
