Hungary Visa Requirements: Entry Rules for Your Nationality

Whether you need a visa for Hungary depends on your citizenship and travel purpose. As a Schengen Area member consisting of 29 countries, Hungary follows standardized European entry requirements that allow visa-free access for many nationalities.

Visa-Free Travel to Hungary

EU and EEA citizens do not need a visa or even a passport to travel to Hungary and only need to present a national ID card. US, Canadian, Australian, UK, and New Zealand citizens can visit visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism or business purposes.

Additional visa-exempt countries include:

  • Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan - 90 days
  • Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico - 90 days
  • Israel, UAE, Qatar - 90 days
  • Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina - 90 days
  • Malaysia, Brunei, Australia, New Zealand - 90 days

ETIAS and Entry/Exit System Requirements

Starting in late 2026, travelers from visa-exempt countries will need to apply for an ETIAS before visiting Hungary and other European Union destinations. This pre-travel authorization costs seven euros and lasts 3 years or until your passport expires. If you already hold a valid Schengen visa, you do not need to apply for ETIAS.

The Entry/Exit System started operations on October 12, 2025, and full implementation is expected by April 10, 2026. This system records biometric data such as fingerprints and facial images at border crossings.

Passport Requirements

Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your intended stay in Hungary, with at least two blank pages. Passports must have been issued less than 10 years ago. At entry, you may need to provide proof of onward travel, sufficient funds, and accommodation.

Transit and Airport Rules

Airport transit typically does not require visas for most visa-exempt nationalities during same-day connections. However, leaving the airport requires meeting standard entry requirements. Nationals of certain countries must have an airport transit visa even to simply transit through the international part of an EU airport.

Visa Required Nationalities

Travelers from certain countries in Africa, Asia, and South America need to secure a visa before their journey. This includes citizens from China, India, Russia, Turkey, and most African nations. Citizens of states without a visa-free agreement with Hungary must have a Schengen visa even for short-term stays. Applications are submitted at Hungarian consulates or authorized visa centers in your country.

Always verify current requirements through official Hungarian government channels or consular services, as visa policies are subject to change based on diplomatic agreements and security assessments.

Hungary Visa Types and Categories

Hungary offers various visa categories designed to accommodate different travel purposes and duration requirements. Understanding the specific visa type that matches your travel intentions is crucial for a successful application process.

Tourist and Visitor Visas

Short-stay tourist visas allow visits up to 90 days within a 180-day period for purposes like tourism, business, cultural events, or medical treatment. These are issued as Schengen Type C visas. Long-stay visitor visas, known as national D visas, are required for stays exceeding 90 days and are typically issued for purposes like study, work, or family reunification. After entering the country, D visa holders are typically required to apply for a residence permit.

Business Visa Categories

Business visas are intended for individuals attending business meetings, conferences, training sessions, or other professional engagements in Hungary, requiring documentation such as an invitation letter from the Hungarian business or event organizer. A Schengen visa grants you the right to enter Hungary to attend a business meeting but not to work in the country. Multiple-entry business visas are available for frequent travelers with established business relationships.

Student and Academic Visas

Long-term D type visa for study purposes is a special national single entry visa for non-EU/EEA citizens that enables its holder to apply for a residence permit for study purposes after enrolling in a university in Hungary. Student visas are processed by the General Directorate for Migration of Hungary for up to 15 days. Third-country nationals holding a residence permit for the purpose of studies may engage in employment during their study period for maximum thirty hours weekly.

Work and Employment Visas

Eight types of residence permits are issued for the purpose of work, divided into two groups depending on the employee's qualification, the employment length, and the company structure. The annual quota for Guest Worker and standard Employment Residence Permits remains capped at 35,000 for 2026. Permits under these categories are temporary, typically issued for up to 2 years with a possible 1-year extension. The Hungary work visa processing time is generally 6 to 12 weeks, depending on permit type and completeness.

Digital Nomad Visa

The White Card for remote workers requires earning at least €3,000 per month from non-Hungarian sources, is issued for 12 months and is extendable once. The residence permit is valid for a year and can be extended for the same period, but after two years, the foreign national must leave Hungary and apply again.

Transit and Special Categories

The Airport Transit visa (Type A) allows travelling through Hungary to a non-Schengen country, permitting stop and wait in the international transit area of a Schengen airport, valid for 24 hours and allows single entry. Residence Permit for Family Reunification is available for spouses and children of permit holders, matching the primary permit's duration with possible work authorization for dependents. The Guest Investor Residence Permit requires investments such as €250,000 in registered venture capital funds or a €1 million donation to a Hungarian public education institution and grants 10-year renewable residency with work rights.

Starting the last quarter of 2026, visa-exempt travelers must apply online for an electronic travel authorization (ETIAS) to enter the Schengen area. The cost of the D visa to Hungary is €110. Visa fees, processing times, and documentation requirements vary significantly between categories, making proper type selection essential for efficient processing.

Student visa applications take 3-5 weeks in less busy periods or up to 3-5 months during peak times in high-demand countries. Work permit applications require 6-12 weeks depending on permit type and documentation completeness.

Application Costs and Fee Structure

Short-stay Schengen visas cost €90 (approximately $97 USD) for adults and €45 (approximately $49 USD) for children aged 6-12

. Children under 6 are exempt from visa fees. • In countries without Hungarian diplomatic representation, another Schengen country may accept applications on Hungary's behalf

Peak Processing Periods

Applications surge during summer months (June-August) and holiday periods, when visa request volumes spike and can add significant delays to standard processing times

. At the beginning of summer, appointment availability is typically 1-3 weeks, but as summer progresses and student applications increase, wait times can exceed one month. Applicants are advised to apply at least 4-6 weeks before travel during peak months of May through August. Step-by-Step Hungary Visa Application Process

Step 1: Determine Your Visa Category

Identify the correct visa type based on your travel purpose and duration. Hungary offers short-stay Schengen visas (Category C) for stays up to 90 days within any 180-day period, and national visas (Category D) for longer stays exceeding 90 days. Review the specific requirements for your category on the Hungarian consulate website or through your local visa application center.

Step 2: Gather Required Documentation

Collect all necessary documents including:

  • Valid passport with at least 3 months validity beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area and issued within the last 10 years
  • Completed application form with recent biometric photograph taken within the last 6 months on a white background
  • Travel insurance covering minimum €30,000 for medical expenses and repatriation
  • Proof of accommodation with booking references, location, and contact details
  • Proof of financial means demonstrating at least €40 per day for the duration of your stay
  • Supporting documents specific to your visa category (invitation letters, employment letters, enrollment proof, etc.)

Ensure all documents are translated into Hungarian or English by certified translators and apostilled when required. Application forms are available in Hungarian, English, or French.

Step 3: Complete Application Forms

Download the application form from the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or collect a paper copy at your designated consulate or embassy. Fill out the form completely and accurately using capital Roman letters. Some consulates offer electronic form completion before in-person submission to streamline the process. Double-check all information matches your supporting documents exactly before submission.

Step 4: Schedule and Submit Application

Book your appointment online at the designated Hungarian consulate, embassy, or authorized visa application center such as VFS Global or BLS International. Applications must be submitted between 6 months and 15 calendar days before your planned departure. Arrive punctually with all original documents and photocopies. Submit biometric data including fingerprints and digital photograph during your appointment. If you have provided biometric data for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months, this information may already be stored in the Visa Information System and you may not need to attend in person.

Step 5: Pay Application Fees

Submit the required visa fee at the time of application. Standard Schengen visa fees are €90 for adults, €45 for children aged 6-12, and free for children under 6. Citizens of countries with visa facilitation agreements pay a reduced fee of €35. National D visa fees are €110. Payment is typically accepted by card; cash and cheques are generally not accepted. Retain your payment receipt as proof of submission and for tracking purposes.

Step 6: Track Application Progress

Monitor your application status using the reference number provided at submission. Standard processing typically takes 15 calendar days but may extend to 45 days during peak periods, if additional documentation is requested, or if consultation with other Schengen member states is required. In exceptional cases, processing can take up to 60 days.

Step 7: Collect Your Decision

Retrieve your passport with the visa decision at the designated collection location during regular business hours. Collection typically does not require a prior appointment. If you cannot collect in person, you may provide a prepaid, trackable self-addressed envelope for return. If approved, verify all visa details including validity dates, number of entries, and duration of stay immediately. For rejections, review the decision letter carefully and consider appeal options within the specified timeframe if legitimate grounds exist.
