Step 1: Identify Your Visa Category
Determine the appropriate visa type based on your travel purpose: tourist, business, work, or residence. Tourist visas are valid for a maximum of 90 days, while temporary residence permits have an average processing time of 1 to 3 months. Short-term residence visas are valid for up to 90 days and renewable once, while temporary residence permits are valid for 2 years and once-renewable, allowing individuals to live and work in Paraguay and apply for a Paraguayan identity card.
Step 2: Complete Online Visa Application
Complete all the information requested in the digital visa application form and attach the required documentation. You will be sent an email confirming the proper reception of your application. The respective Paraguayan consular office will review your application, and if additional documentation is needed, you will be contacted via the email provided.
Step 3: Document Preparation and Authentication
Gather essential documents including:
- Passport valid for at least 6 months after your intended departure with at least 2 blank visa pages
- 3x4 photo in JPG format, updated with a white background, facing forward without accessories
- Proof of economic solvency (employment certificate, bank certificate, another suitable means)
- Criminal record certificate from your country of residence, properly legalized and apostilled
If documents are issued in languages other than Spanish or Portuguese, they must be translated, apostilled and notarized by the Paraguayan Consulate in the country of issuance.
Step 4: Schedule Consular Interview
A date and time for an interview at the relevant Paraguayan consular office will be communicated to continue the process and bring the previously submitted documentation. It is advisable to submit your visa application at least 30 days before your scheduled travel date to Paraguay. For duly justified reasons and with a restrictive criterion, the interview may be conducted by electronic means.
Step 5: Fee Payment and Application Submission
Submit applications through Paraguayan consulates in your home country or immigration offices within Paraguay for residence permits. For spontaneous or occasional residency permits, you must pay a fee of 892,016 PYG (approximately 126 USD). For standard temporary residency permits, you must pay a higher fee of 2,787,550 PYG (approximately 394 USD). Processing times can vary significantly depending on the volume of applications and the complexity of the case, with estimates typically ranging from 3 to 6 months or longer.
Step 6: Biometric Data Collection
After receiving their residence permit, foreigners have 6 months to pick up their Cedula, a Paraguayan ID, and at the Immigration Office, they will be asked to submit their biometric data and pay fees. Applicants must undergo fingerprinting and other biometric procedures at the Dirección General de Migraciones.
Step 7: Application Tracking
Once all the required information is completed and the necessary documents are attached, you will receive an email confirming reception of your application, and the relevant Paraguayan consular office will review your application. Respond promptly to requests for additional documentation to avoid delays.
Step 8: Visa Collection
Collect approved visas in person at the designated consular office or immigration office. The cédula ID is issued between 4 to 8 weeks after the temporary residence permit is approved. Verify all details before leaving the office to ensure accuracy.
Common Mistakes to Avoid: Incomplete documentation, expired documents, insufficient financial proof, and missing apostille certifications frequently cause delays or rejections. Minors under 18 years old cannot apply for a visa on their own and the process must be carried out by the parents or legal guardians, completing the digital visa application form.
