Belize offers various visa categories designed to accommodate different travel purposes, from short-term tourism to long-term business ventures. Understanding these classifications ensures you select the appropriate visa type for your specific requirements.
Tourist and Visitor Visas
Visitors from many countries can enter Belize without a visa for stays up to 30 days, ideal for leisure travel, exploring attractions, and investigating settlement possibilities. If you plan to stay longer than 30 days, you must visit an Immigration Office to get your passport re-stamped and pay an additional fee for each month of extended stay. Extensions can be granted for up to six months, with fees of BZD 200 (approximately USD 100) per additional 30-day period, as set by the Belize Immigration Department.
Travelers holding a valid multiple-entry visa or Permanent Residence Card from the United States, Canada, or a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa may enter Belize without a visa for visits not exceeding 30 days.
Business Visa Categories
Business visas serve travelers temporarily carrying on business, trade, or profession in Belize, including:
- Single-entry Business Visa for one-time meetings or conferences
- Multiple-entry Business Visa for ongoing commercial relationships
- Investment Visa for substantial business investments
Processing times are approximately 30 business days depending on complexity and documentation completeness. All visitors must possess a valid passport, onward or return ticket within 30 days, and sufficient funds of USD 75 per day to cover the length of stay.
Work and Employment Visas
Employment visas are available for foreign nationals officially hired in Belize, conducting consultation visits, sales representatives of overseas companies, foreign media personnel, and technical professionals performing works in Belize. Work permit applications are submitted at any Labour Department Office, and the work permit process typically takes around 4–6 weeks.
The most common types are the Temporary Employment Permit and the Temporary Work Permit for Skilled Workers. Temporary Employment Permits allow foreign nationals to work in Belize for a fixed duration, typically up to one year, and are renewable. Employers must sponsor foreign workers and demonstrate that positions cannot be filled by Belizean citizens. The annual government work permit fee is BZD 2,000 (approximately USD 1,000).
Student and Academic Visas
Student Visas are available for foreign nationals enrolled in primary, secondary, or tertiary educational institutions in Belize. Academic visitors conducting research or attending conferences require institutional sponsorship and must apply through the same channels as other visa categories.
Specialized Visa Types
Diplomatic and Official Visas serve government representatives and international organization personnel. Family Reunion Visas facilitate visits to Belizean residents or citizens, requiring relationship documentation and sponsorship letters.
Transit Visas accommodate travelers passing through Belize en route to final destinations, typically valid for 24–72 hours depending on circumstances.
Digital Nomad Program
Belize's Work Where You Vacation program allows remote employees to live in Belize and work for employers based outside the country for up to six months. The program is open to employees only — self-employed individuals and freelancers are not currently eligible. Key eligibility criteria include:
- Minimum annual income of USD 75,000 (individual applicants) or USD 100,000 (couples and families)
- Proof of remote employment outside Belize
- Notarized banking reference and recent bank statements
- Criminal record check dated no more than six months prior to application
The enrollment fee is BZD 500 per adult and BZD 200 per child under 18. Foreign-sourced income is not taxed in Belize for participants who remain in the country for fewer than 183 days in a given tax year.
