Most travelers require a visa to enter Uganda, with limited exceptions for specific nationalities and diplomatic passport holders. Uganda maintains strict entry requirements, making advance visa planning essential for the majority of international visitors.
Visa-Free Entry
In March 2026, Uganda announced an updated visa exemption list covering 40 countries, whose citizens can enter visa-free for stays of up to 3 months for tourism or business. Citizens of the East African Community countries retain visa-free access: Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Burundi, and South Sudan. The African part of the list also includes Botswana, Comoros, Eritrea, Eswatini, Gambia, Ghana, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Beyond Africa, the exemption covers Ireland, Malaysia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Cyprus, Malta, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Barbados, Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Belize, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands. Citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, and European Union countries are not exempt and must obtain a visa before travel. The March 2026 list supersedes earlier arrangements, and countries such as Angola that appeared on previous lists are no longer included. Under the same update, visa exemption for holders of diplomatic and official passports was narrowed to 12 countries: Algeria, Cuba, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Russia, Senegal, South Africa, Turkey (diplomatic passports only), Venezuela, and Vietnam; Italy and Namibia no longer appear on this list.
Electronic Visa Requirement
All travelers seeking admission to Uganda are required to apply for a visa before travel using the Government of Uganda's Electronic Visa and Permit Application System. There are no visas issued on arrival through standard procedures. The single-entry tourist visa costs USD 50, while the East African Tourist Visa costs USD 100. Most applications are approved within 6 days. Upon approval, travelers receive an authorization letter that must be presented at the port of entry, where biometric data will be collected and the visa issued.
Passport Requirements
Your passport must have 6 months validity beyond the date of your arrival and at least 2 blank pages for visa stamps. All travelers aged one year and older must carry a valid yellow fever immunization card (International Certificate of Vaccination), issued at least 10 days before arrival; under current rules a single dose is valid for life.
Transit Passengers
Transit passengers remaining in the international area of Entebbe Airport do not require visas. However, leaving the airport or overnight stays require proper entry documentation and a transit visa, which is valid for a maximum of 7 days.
East African Tourist Visa
The East African Tourist Visa allows multiple entries to Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda for tourism over a period of 90 days. This visa is valid for 90 days and is not renewable upon expiry or upon exit from the block. This visa does not grant entry into Tanzania, Burundi, or South Sudan. Travelers must enter the country that issued the visa first before visiting the other two countries.
