Bulgaria Visa Requirements: Do You Need a Visa?

Whether you need a visa for Bulgaria depends on your nationality and purpose of visit. As an EU member state, Bulgaria offers visa-free access to numerous countries, but requirements vary significantly based on your passport.

Visa-Free Travel to Bulgaria

EU/EEA citizens do not need a visa to travel to Bulgaria and can stay for unlimited periods with a valid national ID card or passport.

90-Day Visa-Free Access:

Nationals of several countries with visa waiver agreements, such as Canada, Australia, and the United States, can visit visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. This includes:

  • United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand
  • United Kingdom
  • Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia
  • Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Mexico
  • Israel, UAE, Qatar
  • Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova

The 90-day visa-free stay follows the 90/180 rule: you cannot stay in Bulgaria more than 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies whether your stay is continuous or divided across multiple visits.

Passport Requirements

All travelers must present a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond intended departure from Bulgaria. Passports must contain at least 2 blank pages for visa purposes. EU citizens may use national identity cards instead of passports.

ETIAS Travel Authorization

Starting the last quarter of 2026, visa-exempt travelers will be required to have a travel authorization to enter most European countries, including Bulgaria. ETIAS is not a visa but rather a mandatory travel authorization linked electronically to your passport, valid for short stays up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Citizens from visa-free countries will need to apply online before travel once the system becomes operational.

Entry/Exit System

The European Union's new Entry/Exit System (EES) is being rolled out in a phased way across external borders, with full operation expected from 10 April 2026. This system will register entry and exit data, including biometric information, for non-EU travelers entering Bulgaria and other Schengen countries.

Transit Requirements

Airport transit generally does not require a visa for same-day connections within the international zone. However, certain nationalities require airport transit visas. Check with Bulgarian diplomatic missions if connecting through Sofia Airport.

Visa Required

Citizens of China, India, Russia, Turkey, and most African and Asian countries need visas regardless of visit duration or purpose. Visa application forms can be submitted not earlier than 6 months before the intended travel date and must be submitted personally or through an authorized agent.

Check current requirements through Bulgarian consulates or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as visa policies change frequently and exceptions may apply to your specific situation.

Bulgaria Visa Types and Categories

Bulgaria offers various visa categories designed to accommodate different travel purposes and durations. Understanding the specific requirements and conditions for each type ensures you select the appropriate visa for your intended stay.

Tourist and Visitor Visas

Short-term tourist visas allow stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period for leisure travel. Long-term visitor visas may be granted for a maximum of six months or one year, with the possibility of multiple entries within the validity period. Multiple-entry options are available for frequent travelers, valid for up to 12 months, and sometimes for 5 years.

Business Visa Categories

Business visas cater to various commercial activities:

  • Single-entry business visas for one-time meetings or conferences
  • Multiple-entry business visas for ongoing commercial relationships
  • Investment visas for substantial business investments requiring at least 10 Bulgarian nationals employed as a result of their economic activity
  • Start-up visas for new entrepreneurs with initial capital investment of at least 51,130 euros

Processing times range from 10 to 20 business days for short-term visas. The embassy application fee for short-stay visas is 60 euros.

Student and Academic Visas

Student visas require acceptance letters from recognized Bulgarian institutions and are issued to applicants enrolled in accredited Bulgarian universities as full-time students. Student visas are not granted for enrollment in Bulgarian or other language courses. Research visas support academic professionals conducting studies or collaborations. Extensions are possible upon demonstrating continued enrollment or research progress.

Employment and Work Visas

Work visas require a work permit issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy after the applicant has received a confirmed offer of employment. Processing of the work permit typically takes around 10 to 30 calendar days, and after permit approval, the long-stay Type D visa application usually takes around 35 to 45 business days. Freelance visas require a freelance activity permit issued by the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy for a period of up to 12 months.

Digital Nomad Visas

Applications for digital nomad visas started on December 20, 2025, making Bulgaria a full-fledged alternative to digital nomad visas in Spain, Italy and other EU countries. Applicants must meet a minimum income requirement equal to 50 times Bulgaria's monthly minimum wage, translating to roughly 27,500 euros annually. The digital nomad residence permit is initially valid for 12 months and can be renewed once for an additional 12 months, allowing a maximum stay of approximately 2 years.

Transit and Special Categories

Transit visas allow entry to Bulgaria one, two, or three transit passages for up to 2 days each. Family reunion visas are issued to applicants married to persons with the right of permanent residence or who are family members of Bulgarian nationals. Medical visas are issued to applicants seeking therapy or treatment in a medical facility, with evidence that all transportation, medical, and living expenses will be covered. Diplomatic and official visas serve government representatives and international organization staff, processed through specialized channels with different documentation requirements.

Step-by-Step Application Process for Bulgarian Visas

Step 1: Determine Your Visa Category

Identify the correct visa type based on your travel purpose, duration, and nationality. Short-stay Schengen visas cover tourism, business, and transit up to 90 days in any 180-day period, while national visas are required for longer stays exceeding 90 days.

Step 2: Prepare Required Documentation

  • Complete application form accurately with typed letters, filled in English or Bulgarian
  • Gather passport photos meeting biometric specifications: 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm against light background
  • Prepare supporting documents specific to your visa category
  • Obtain certified translations for non-English or non-Bulgarian documents
  • Arrange document legalization through apostille or diplomatic channels
  • Ensure passport is valid for at least 3 months after intended departure and contains at least 2 blank pages

Step 3: Schedule Your Appointment

Applications can be submitted up to 6 months before your intended travel date. Long-stay D visa appointments must be scheduled in person at the Bulgarian consulate responsible for your jurisdiction. Contact your nearest Bulgarian embassy or consulate by phone or email to schedule your appointment.

Step 4: Submit Application and Biometrics

Attend your scheduled appointment with complete documentation. The Entry/Exit System (EES) has been operational since October 12, 2025, recording non-EU nationals' biometric data, travel document information, and travel dates digitally. Provide biometric data including fingerprints and digital photographs at the visa application center. Submit original documents for verification alongside copies.

Step 5: Pay Processing Fees

Complete fee payment using accepted methods: cash, credit cards, or bank transfers depending on location. Fees are non-refundable regardless of application outcome. Retain payment receipts for tracking purposes.

Step 6: Track Application Status

Monitor processing progress through tracking systems provided at your application center using your reference number. Standard processing for short-term visas takes 10 to 20 business days. Long-term visa applications may take up to 60 or more days. Processing times may extend during peak periods or for complex cases.

Step 7: Collect Your Decision

Retrieve your passport and visa decision notification from the location where you applied. If approved, verify all visa details for accuracy including dates, entries, and personal information. Rejected applications include detailed refusal reasons and information about appeal procedures.
