India Visa Requirements: Do You Need a Visa?

Most travelers require a visa to enter India, with limited exceptions for specific nationalities and circumstances. India maintains strict entry requirements, making advance visa planning essential for the majority of international visitors.

Countries with Visa-Free Access

Only citizens of Nepal and Bhutan can enter India without a visa for unlimited stays, though they must not arrive from or transit through mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, or Pakistan prior to seeking entry into India. Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) and Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) cardholders are exempt from visa requirements and may live and work in India without any limit of stay. All other nationalities must obtain appropriate visas before arrival, regardless of travel purpose or duration.

e-Visa Eligible Countries

Citizens from over 170 countries can apply for e-Visas online, including:

  • United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Japan - Tourist e-Visa with stay up to 180 days continuously per visit on 1-year and 5-year visas
  • EU countries - Multiple entry options available with 1-year and 5-year e-Visa choices
  • Australia, New Zealand - Standard e-Visa processing
  • Japan, South Korea, UAE nationals - Visa on arrival facility available

Persons who have ever held Pakistani citizenship, or who have a parent or a spouse that has held Pakistani citizenship, are ineligible for e-Visas and must apply to their local Indian mission for visas. As of April 2025, India has cancelled visas allotted to Pakistani citizens with visa issuance suspended indefinitely.

Essential Entry Requirements

All visa holders must possess:

  • Passport valid for 6 months minimum from the date of arrival in India
  • At least two blank pages for stamping by the Immigration Officer
  • Valid visa matching travel purpose
  • Return or onward travel documentation
  • Electronic arrival form submission available from October 2025, with paper forms accepted until March 2026

Transit Passengers

Airport Transit Visa required for most nationalities, even without leaving the international zone. Electronic visas are not accepted for land border crossings into India. Entry on a tourist e-Visa is limited to 33 airports and 9 seaports, with land border crossings not allowed for e-Tourist entries. Only passengers with onward flights within 24 hours to select destinations may qualify for transit without visa - confirm with airline beforehand.

Special Categories

E-Visa is not available to Diplomatic or Official Passport Holders or Laissez-passer travel document holders. International Travelers having a Pakistani Passport or are of Pakistani origin must apply for regular Visa at the Indian Mission. E-Visa is not available to individuals endorsed on Parent's or Spouse's Passport; each individual should have a separate passport.

Official Verification

Indian visa rules and instructions change often. Always verify current requirements through the official Indian visa portal or nearest Indian embassy, as policies change frequently and country-specific conditions apply. India may deny entry to travelers without valid documents or the correct type of visa.

03

India Visa Types and Categories

India offers various visa categories tailored to different travel purposes, each with specific requirements and validity periods. Understanding these distinctions ensures you select the appropriate visa type for your journey.

Tourist and Visitor Visas

Tourist visas are available for leisure travel, sightseeing, and visiting family or friends. Options include:

  • e-Tourist Visa: 30-day (double entry), 1-year (multiple entry), or 5-year (multiple entry) validity
  • Regular Tourist Visa: Up to 10 years with multiple entry privileges

Travelers from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan can stay up to 180 days continuously per visit on 1-year and 5-year e-Tourist visas, while many other nationalities are limited to 90 days continuously per visit. Business visas allow attending meetings, signing contracts, visiting suppliers, attending trade shows, and exploring investments, but you cannot take up salaried employment on a business visa.

Employment and Work Visas

Employment visas are for foreign nationals hired to work for an Indian company or organization registered in India, requiring a formal employment contract and proof of specialized skills or qualifications, granted for one year initially and renewable annually based on continued employment. The visa may be extended for a total period of 5 years from the date of issue of the initial employment visa, on a year-to-year basis.

Student and Academic Visas

Student visas are granted to students admitted to recognized universities or institutions in India to pursue regular studies or specific courses, and can be issued for the duration of the course for a maximum period of 5 years. Research visas cater to academic researchers and scholars. e-Student visa and e-Student Dependent visa options are now available alongside traditional paper visas.

Transit and Special Categories

Transit visas allow stays for a period not exceeding 3 days for each journey. Medical visas offer 60 days validity from the date of first arrival with triple entry, while medical attendant visas provide the same 60-day validity and triple entry within the visa validity period. Conference visas serve delegates attending seminars and international events with 30-day validity and single entry, and India has also introduced e-Ayush visa, e-Ayush Attendant visa, e-Transit visa, e-Mountaineering visa, e-Film visa, e-Entry visa, and e-Production Investment visa.

Step-by-Step Visa Application Process for India

Step 1: Determine Your Visa Category

Identify the appropriate visa type based on your travel purpose. India offers e-Visa in 14 sub-categories including e-Tourist Visa for 30 days, 1 year, or 5 years, e-Business Visa, e-Medical Visa, e-Medical Attendant Visa, e-Conference Visa, e-Ayush Visa, e-Ayush Attendant Visa, e-Student Visa, e-Student Dependent Visa, e-Transit Visa, e-Mountaineering Visa, e-Film Visa, e-Entry Visa, and e-Production Investment Visa. Consider your intended duration of stay and entry requirements. Verify current visa policies as regulations frequently change.

Step 2: Gather Required Documentation

Collect essential documents including:

  • Valid passport with minimum 6 months validity from date of arrival in India
  • Recent passport-sized photograph with white background, less than 1 MB in file size
  • Passport scan of bio page, clear and in color
  • Supporting documents specific to your visa category
  • Return ticket or onward journey ticket and sufficient financial means for your stay

Ensure your passport has at least two blank pages for stamping by the Immigration Officer on arrival. All documents must be in English language.

Step 3: Complete Online Application

For e-Visa applications, access the official Indian visa online portal at indianvisaonline.gov.in or use the official Indian Visa Su-Swagatam Mobile App. Provide personal details, passport information, travel dates, and your entry or exit airports with complete accuracy, as small errors can delay approval. The entire process takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete the application and make the payment. For regular visa applications, fill the online application form, then print the completed application, sign it, and submit the physical copy along with supporting documents and passport to the Indian Visa Application Center or directly at the Indian Mission on the scheduled appointed date.

Step 4: Upload Required Documents and Pay Fees

Upload a clear passport-size photo and a scanned copy of your passport bio page. Visa fees depend on the visa type, duration, and nationality of the applicant. Short-term tourist visas usually cost less, while long-term tourist visas, business visas, and medical visas cost more. All fees must be paid online and are non-refundable, even if the visa application is rejected. Payment channels include credit and debit card transactions for all cards issued internationally by Visa and MasterCard.

Step 5: Receive Electronic Travel Authorization

In most cases, e-Visa applications are approved within 3 to 5 working days. However, during peak travel seasons or if additional verification is required, processing time may increase. It is wise to apply at least 10 days in advance. For regular paper visas processed through Indian Missions, visa processing requires a minimum of 3 working days. Your e-Visa approval letter, known as Electronic Travel Authorization or ETA, arrives by email. Print it and carry a copy for both arrival and hotel check-ins.

Step 6: Track Application Status

Monitor your application progress through official tracking systems using your reference number. The status of visa applications can be checked on the link for Visa Enquiry. The e-Visa fee payment status may take up to 2 hours to update due to technical reasons or network delays. Wait for 2 hours for payment status updating after final submission before re-applying.

Step 7: Attend Biometric Enrollment if Required

For regular visa applications, biometric requirements apply to all visa types including short stay, long stay, and transit. If required to provide biometric information, you must attend at a visa application center where you can enroll your biometric information after submitting your application. Biometric data consists of 10 fingerprints collected via scanner and photo captured by facial cameras. The process is quick, discreet, and non-intrusive. Applicants below age 12 years or above 70 years are exempted from fingerprint requirements. For e-Visa holders, biometric details will be mandatorily captured at Immigration on arrival in India.

Step 8: Arrival in India

Carry a copy of your Electronic Travel Authorization along with your passport at the time of travel. Confirm that your ETA status shows as GRANTED on the official website prior to commencement of your journey. Entry into India with e-Visa is allowed only through designated 31 international airports and 6 major Indian seaports. You can exit India from any authorized immigration checkpoint. If you have obtained a new passport after receiving your e-Visa, entry will be allowed on the new passport, but you must also carry the old passport on which the e-Visa was granted. Verify all details for accuracy upon entry.

Step 9: If Application is Rejected

E-Visa processing fees once submitted are non-refundable as the fee is for processing of the application and is not dependent on either grant or rejection of the application. If rejected, review reasons provided and consider reapplication with corrected information or additional documentation. Consult the official e-visa portal helpline or contact support for clarification on rejection reasons.
