Namibia has recently updated its visa policies to facilitate easier access for international travelers. Effective from 1 April 2025, the country introduced a new Visa on Arrival (VOA) system, aiming to streamline entry procedures and promote tourism and investment. Since April 1, 2025, Namibia ended the visa exemption previously granted to 33 nationalities, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, and Australia, citing the lack of reciprocal agreements. Namibian authorities strongly encourage the use of the e-Visa on arrival system, which allows travelers to submit their application online before their trip and save time at entry points. Countries with visa exemption agreements include Angola, Botswana, Brazil, Cuba, Eswatini, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Macau, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Russian Federation, Seychelles, Singapore, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The Visa on Arrival is by default valid for 30 days from your first entry into Namibia, although it may be possible to receive up to 90 days authorization from the immigration inspector upon arrival. The cost is 1,600 Namibian dollars (approximately USD 88) for travelers over 11 years old, 800 Namibian dollars for children between 6 to 11 years, and free for children under 6. Located in southwestern Africa, this stable democracy offers streamlined processes for legitimate travelers while maintaining security standards.

Visa Requirements for Namibia: What You Need to Know

Whether you need a visa for Namibia depends on your nationality and purpose of visit. Since April 1, 2025, Namibia ended visa exemption for 33 nationalities, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, and Australia, introducing a visa on arrival system based on diplomatic reciprocity.

Visa-Free Access to Namibia

Citizens from the following countries can enter Namibia without a visa: Angola, Botswana, Brazil, Cuba, Eswatini, Hong Kong (SAR), Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, Lesotho, Macau (SAR), Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Russian Federation, Seychelles, Singapore, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. These travelers can stay for a maximum of 3 months within any 1 calendar year.

Botswana and Namibia signed an agreement in February 2023 allowing citizens to travel between the two countries using only identity cards, with passports no longer required.

Visa on Arrival and E-Visa

Citizens of 90 countries and territories can obtain a visa on arrival for a maximum stay of 90 days. This includes travelers from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, most European countries, and many other nations. Namibian authorities strongly recommend applying for an e-Visa in advance to avoid complications or delays upon arrival.

The cost is 1,600 Namibian dollars (approximately 85 USD) for travelers over 11 years old, 800 Namibian dollars for children aged 6 to 11, and no fee for children under 6. A service fee of 400 Namibian dollars applies for visa applications submitted manually upon arrival at the immigration counter.

The Visa on Arrival takes 48 hours to process. The Visa on Arrival is valid for up to 30 days, though you can apply for a Holiday Visa for stays up to 90 days or extend your Visa on Arrival once in the country before it expires.

Essential Entry Requirements

All travelers to Namibia must meet these mandatory requirements:

  • Passport valid for at least 6 months after the date of entry
  • At least 3 blank pages for entry and exit stamps
  • Valid return or onward travel ticket
  • Sufficient funds for your stay
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate if traveling from a country where yellow fever is endemic

Who Needs a Visa

Visitors from countries without visa exemption agreements with Namibia must obtain a visa before arrival. Any stays longer than 90 days per year or visits for non-tourist purposes like work or volunteering require a visa, regardless of your country. Business travelers and those seeking employment must apply for appropriate permits through the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Transit Passengers

Airport transit without leaving the international zone typically does not require a visa for most nationalities, provided you have confirmed onward travel within 24 hours.

Visa requirements change frequently. Always verify current requirements through official Namibian diplomatic missions before traveling.

Namibian Visa Classifications and Entry Requirements

Tourist and Visitor Visas

Namibia offers tourist visas valid for up to 30 days through the Visa on Arrival system introduced from April 1, 2025. While the default entry period is generally 30 days, you may receive up to 90 days authorization from the immigration inspector upon arrival. The cost of visa on arrival is N$1,600 (approximately US$88) for citizens of non-African countries and N$1,200 (approximately US$66) for nationals of African countries. If you want to stay up to 90 days, you can apply for a Holiday Visa or extend your Visa on Arrival once you are in the country before it expires. Visa on arrival is issued at Hosea Kutako International Airport, Walvis Bay Airport, and various border posts including Katima Mulilo, Ngoma, Noordoewer, Oshikango, Trans Kalahari, and others for selected countries.

Business and Commercial Visas

Business travelers can obtain visas for commercial activities in Namibia. Categories include:

  • Visas for training, conducting audits, and visiting subsidiary companies, while attending meetings, exploring business opportunities, and attending workshops as non-facilitators are visa exempt
  • Conference and meeting attendance visas with a maximum stay of 90 days available through visa on arrival
  • Multiple-entry business visas for regular commercial activities available through advance application

Work and Employment Authorization

All visitors traveling to Namibia to work at subsidiary companies, provide training to local staff, conduct audits, or engage in volunteer work are required to apply for employment permits or work visas regardless of whether they are citizens of visa-exempt countries. Short-term work visas may take approximately 7 to 90 working days, while long-term work permits typically require 3 to 5 months for processing. The process includes demonstrating that the position could not be filled by a Namibian citizen, ensuring compliance with labor laws, and providing necessary documentation. Work permits align with contract duration and require Ministry of Labour clearance.

Student and Academic Visas

Student visas mandate acceptance letters from recognized Namibian institutions. Study permits align with academic program duration, typically issued for one academic year with annual renewal possibilities. Those wishing to study must apply for study permits in their country of residence before entry, as tourist visa holders cannot enroll for studies. Research visas accommodate academic collaboration and fieldwork activities.

Transit and Special Categories

Transit visas permit short stopovers for onward travel. According to the Namibian Ministry of Home Affairs, the Visa on Arrival takes 48 hours to process. Diplomatic and official visas serve government representatives with expedited processing. Family reunion visas enable extended stays for visiting Namibian residents, requiring sponsorship documentation and relationship verification. Parents traveling with minor children must produce unabridged birth certificates demonstrating parental relationship, and when one parent travels alone with a child, a notarized consent from the other parent is required.

Step-by-Step Visa Application Process for Namibia

Step 1: Identify Your Visa Category

Determine the appropriate visa type based on your travel purpose, whether tourism, business, transit, or residence. Verify duration requirements and ensure your passport has at least six months validity remaining with three blank pages for visa stamps.

Step 2: Register on the Online Portal

Namibia launched its online visa application system in March 2025, enabling travelers to apply before arrival. Visit the official Ministry of Home Affairs e-services portal at eservices.mhaiss.gov.na. Create a user account, then complete the online form with personal data (surname, first names, marital status), passport details (number, date and place of issue), and trip information (purpose of stay, dates of travel, accommodation address, port of entry). For those applying in person through embassies or consulates abroad, schedule appointments in advance as walk-in submissions are typically not accepted.

Step 3: Document Upload and Submission

Gather and upload essential documents including:

  • Completed visa application form with digital passport-sized photograph
  • Scanned copy of passport biographical pages
  • Proof of accommodation and return flight bookings
  • Financial statements demonstrating sufficient funds
  • Travel insurance coverage documentation

Upload a scanned passport photo and passport copy. All foreign documents require official translation into English and may need consular legalization depending on your country of origin. Once you complete the form, a visa approval notification typically appears within seconds directing you to payment.

Step 4: Fee Payment and Processing

Pay visa fees of N$1200 (approximately US$65) for African Union countries or N$1600 (approximately US$87) for other countries. Payment is made online through the portal or in person at embassies using accepted methods such as bank transfers or certified checks. E-visa on arrival applications take 48 hours to process, while embassy applications typically require 5-15 working days for standard processing. Retain all payment receipts for tracking purposes.

Step 5: Approval and Collection

Once approved, the electronic visa is valid for 30 days from the arrival date and authorizes multiple 30-day stays. Download and print your e-visa approval. Track your application status online through the e-Services portal. For embassy applications, collect your passport personally or through authorized representatives with proper documentation. If refused, you will receive detailed reasons and information about potential appeal procedures.
