Myanmar Visa Requirements: Do You Need a Visa to Enter?

Most travelers require a visa to enter Myanmar. However, citizens from select countries enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival privileges for short-term visits.

Visa-Free Entry for Tourism

Citizens of the following eight countries can enter Myanmar without a visa for tourism purposes, with stays ranging from 14 to 30 days:

  • Other countries: Japan, South Korea

Visa-free travelers must enter and exit through designated ports of entry.

Visa on Arrival

Visa-on-arrival services are available for business purposes for citizens from 52 countries at Yangon International Airport, Mandalay International Airport, and Nay Pyi Taw International Airport. For tourism visa on arrival, stays of up to 30 days are permitted, and fees vary depending on travel purpose. Tourist visa on arrival is typically available at the three main international airports, though eligibility is limited and subject to current policies.

eVisa Requirements

US, UK, and citizens from most other nationalities must obtain an eVisa before travel. Tourist eVisas allow a maximum stay of 28 days and cost 50 USD. The eVisa is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. Processing time is a minimum of 3 working days, excluding weekends and Myanmar public holidays. Express processing is available for 56 USD. The eVisa is single entry only.

Passport Requirements

All travelers must have:

  • Passport valid for a minimum of 6 months from entry date
  • At least one blank page for entry stamp
  • Return or onward ticket
  • Confirmed accommodation at a registered hotel or lodging provider (personal residence addresses are not accepted)

Transit Passengers

Transit passengers staying under 24 hours in the international transit area without clearing immigration typically do not need a visa. However, verify current policies as Myanmar transit regulations change frequently.

Myanmar Visa Categories and Entry Options

The fee for a tourist e-Visa costs 50 USD. The Myanmar e-Visa is only valid for travelers arriving at Yangon International Airport, Mandalay International Airport, Nay Pyi Taw International Airport, and 5 international land border checkpoints including Tachileik, Myawaddy, Kawthaung, Tamu, and Rih Khaw Dar.

Business Visa Categories

Business Visa (B) accommodates commercial activities, meetings, and trade negotiations. Available options include:

  • Single-entry business visas valid for 90 days from the date of issue with maximum stay of 70 days
  • Multiple-entry business visas allowing unlimited entries for periods of 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year, with a maximum stay of 70 days per entry
  • Stay permits that remove the 70-day limit, allowing foreign workers to remain in Myanmar for lengths of 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year
  • Multiple-journey special re-entry visas valid for 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year

The fee for a business e-Visa is 70 USD. Visa on arrival for business purposes is available for citizens from 52 countries flying into Yangon International Airport, Naypyidaw Airport, or Mandalay International Airport.

Employment and Work Visas

Employment Visa (E) enables foreign nationals to work legally in Myanmar. Typically valid for 70 days, but extendable via a stay permit and multiple re-entry visa. A separate Work Permit is required for any foreign national undertaking employment in Myanmar, issued by the Ministry of Labour. Employer sponsorship is a fundamental requirement, and the employing entity must be a legally registered company acting as sponsor. The work permit process generally takes 3 to 5 weeks.

Student and Academic Visas

Regular eVisa processing takes a minimum of 3 working days, excluding weekends and Myanmar public holidays. Express tourist service processing takes up to 24 hours and is available 365 days a year. You will receive the eVisa approval letter via email once approved - print it out and bring it along with your passport to present upon arrival. The approval letter is valid for 90 days from the date of issue.
