Ireland Visa Requirements: Do You Need a Visa?

Whether you need a visa for Ireland depends on your nationality and travel purpose. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens and UK nationals enjoy visa-free access with no time restrictions, while many other nationalities can visit visa-free for tourism or business.

Visa-Free Access to Ireland

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens can enter Ireland freely with valid passport or national ID card. US citizens can visit Ireland without a visa for up to 90 days. Citizens from these countries enjoy 90-day visa-free stays:

  • United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand
  • Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia
  • Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico
  • Israel, South Africa

From 25 February 2022, citizens of Ukraine do not need a visa to travel to Ireland. The Short Stay Visa Waiver Programme allows citizens of certain countries with valid UK short stay visas to enter Ireland visa-free for up to 90 days, and the scheme has been extended to 31 October 2026.

UK citizens have special arrangements allowing extended stays under the Common Travel Area agreement.

Passport Requirements

Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay in Ireland, with no minimum passport validity requirement for US citizens. However, travelers who require a visa must have 6 months validity on their passport from their planned departure date. Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the period of stay if you plan on transiting a Schengen country. Ensure you have sufficient blank pages for entry stamps.

Who Needs a Visa

Citizens from China, India, Russia, Turkey, South Africa, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and many others require visas for Ireland. This applies to all travel purposes including tourism, business, and transit. Visa-required nationals visiting Ireland for short stays of 90 days or less need to apply for a Visit visa.

Transit Requirements

Transit passengers remaining airside typically do not need visas, but citizens requiring visas for Ireland generally need transit visas even for short layovers. Dublin Airport transit rules vary by nationality. Check the Irish Immigration Service for current transit visa requirements for your nationality.

Verify Your Requirements

Whether you need a visa to travel to Ireland depends on what country you are from, and you should visit the Irish Immigration Service Travel Path for more information regarding your personal requirements. Ireland is not party to the Schengen Agreement, and a Schengen visa or residence permit does not entitle you to travel to Ireland without a visa. Visa policies can change, and special agreements may affect specific passport holders.

Ireland Visa Types and Categories

Ireland offers various visa categories designed to accommodate different travel purposes and durations. Understanding the specific visa type required for your journey ensures a smooth application process and compliance with Irish immigration requirements.

Tourist and Visitor Visas

Short-stay visitor visas, known as Type C visas, allow tourism, family visits, and leisure activities for up to 90 days. Long-stay Type D visas accommodate extended visits exceeding three months, for purposes such as study, work, or joining family members, requiring comprehensive documentation and medical insurance coverage.

Business and Conference Visas

Business visas facilitate:

  • Conference participation and professional meetings

Student and Academic Visas

Ireland offers two types of student visas: a C study visa for short-term courses under 90 days, and a D study visa for courses exceeding 90 days, including undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs. Students must be enrolled in a full-time course on the official Interim List of Eligible Programmes. Processing typically requires 4-8 weeks, with longer times during peak intakes.

Employment and Work Visas

The Critical Skills Employment Permit is a two-year permit for high-skill, in-demand roles with salary requirements of €38,000 or €64,000 depending on qualifications. From March 1, 2026, General Employment Permits require a minimum salary of €36,605, with exceptions for meat processors, horticultural workers, healthcare assistants, and home carers at €32,691. Intra-Company Transfer Employment Permits allow multinational enterprises to transfer senior managers and key personnel to Irish operations. Additional work visa categories include the Atypical Working Scheme visa, Employment Van der Elst visa for workers temporarily posted from EU-based companies, and Employment Scientific Researcher visa.

Transit and Multiple-Entry Options

Transit visas cost €25 and accommodate airport connections. Multiple-entry visas provide flexibility for frequent travelers and may be approved for those who need to travel regularly to Ireland on short visits for business meetings, valid for up to 5 years from the date of issue.

Special Categories

Additional visa types include diplomatic and official visas for government representatives, family reunification visas for close family members of Irish residents, and medical treatment visas for specialized healthcare services. Step-by-Step Visa Application Process for Ireland

1. Determine Your Visa Category

Identify the correct visa type based on your travel purpose: tourist, business, study, work, or family visit. Short Stay C visas are for stays of 90 days or less, while Long Stay D visas are required for stays exceeding 90 days. Review duration limits and entry requirements specific to your nationality and intended activities in Ireland.

2. Gather Required Documentation

Compile essential documents including:

  • Valid passport with minimum 6 months validity beyond your intended departure date
  • Completed online application form and signed summary form
  • Two recent passport photographs taken within the last 6 months, 35mm x 45mm, color with white background
  • Financial evidence including bank statements covering the last 6 months showing sufficient funds
  • Travel insurance coverage
  • Supporting documents specific to visa category including invitation letters, enrollment confirmations, or employment permits

Ensure all documents are translated into English by certified translators if originally in other languages. All documents must be originals, and you should retain photocopies for your records.

3. Complete Online Application

Access the official AVATS online application system through the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service portal. Fill out forms accurately with consistent information across all documents. After submission, you will receive a transaction reference number and application summary form. Print and sign the summary form with your name and date. Double-check all entries before submission to avoid processing delays.

4. Schedule and Submit Application

Book an appointment at the Irish embassy, consulate, or designated visa application center operated by VFS Global in your country. Submit your complete application package including the signed summary form, original passport, and all supporting documents during your scheduled appointment. Arrive punctually with all original documents and copies. For locations using VFS Global, your application will be forwarded to the relevant Irish visa office within 1-2 working days.

5. Pay Visa Fees

Process payment using accepted methods: cash, card, or bank transfer depending on location. Retain payment receipts as proof of fee submission. Note that fees are non-refundable regardless of application outcome. Include proof of payment with postal applications.

6. Provide Biometric Data

If you are resident in China, Hong Kong, India, Nigeria, or Pakistan, you are required to provide fingerprints each time you apply for a visa to Ireland. Submit fingerprints and digital photographs at the visa application center during your appointment. This biometric information becomes part of your visa record and is mandatory for applicants from these countries. Children under 5 years are exempt from providing fingerprints. The biometric requirement may be rolled out to additional locations in the future.

7. Track and Collect Your Visa

Monitor application status through official tracking systems provided by VFS Global or the relevant visa office. Processing typically takes 8 weeks for Short Stay C visas and tourist visas, though this can extend during peak travel periods such as summer holidays or Christmas. Long Stay D visas and family reunification visas may take 6-12 months depending on the visa type and sponsor nationality. Visa decisions for the Dublin office are published every Tuesday. Collect your passport with visa decision or receive notification if additional documentation is required. Allow additional time for document transit between the visa application center and the visa office.
