Ukraine Visa Requirements: Do You Need a Visa?

Whether you need a visa for Ukraine depends on your nationality and purpose of travel. Citizens from numerous countries can enter Ukraine visa-free for short-term stays, while others must obtain a visa in advance.

Visa-Free Entry to Ukraine

Citizens of 81 countries can enter Ukraine without a visa, primarily for tourism, business, or private visits. The following regions and countries benefit from visa-free access:

  • European Union citizens: 90 days within any 180-day period
  • United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand: 90 days within any 180-day period
  • United Kingdom: 90 days within any 180-day period
  • Japan, South Korea, Singapore: 90 days within any 180-day period
  • Brazil, Argentina, Israel: 90 days within any 180-day period
  • Georgia, Moldova: 90 days within any 180-day period
  • Turkey: 90 days within any 180-day period
  • United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait: 90 days within any 180-day period

Your passport must be valid for the entire period of stay in Ukraine. For visa applications, passports must be valid for at least 3 months after the intended date of departure from Ukraine and have at least 2 pages free from any visas, marks, or stamps. Citizens of Turkey and Georgia can enter Ukraine by providing only ID cards.

Passport Requirements

Passports must be valid for 6 months upon arrival for most nationalities entering Ukraine. Ensure you have at least two blank pages for entry stamps. Entry requires a valid foreign passport, the necessary visa if required, medical insurance, and documents confirming the purpose of your trip.

Electronic Visa Option

Ukraine resumed issuing e-Visas on 19 February 2025 after suspension in 2022 due to the Russian invasion. Citizens of 45 specified countries may obtain an e-Visa for 30 days as single or double entry visas for tourism, business, private, or medical purposes. The cost is 20 USD for single-entry and 30 USD for double-entry, with processing within 3 business days, or urgent processing for double the fee with 1 business day processing.

Transit Passengers

Transit passengers remaining in the international zone of Ukrainian airports for up to 24 hours typically do not need a visa. However, if you plan to leave the airport or stay longer, standard visa requirements apply. Ukraine's airspace remains closed, so entry is currently only possible via land border crossings.

Visa Required Countries

On 1 July 2022, Ukraine introduced a unilateral visa regime with Russia. Citizens of countries not listed in the visa-free category, including most African, Asian, and some Latin American nations, must obtain a visa before traveling to Ukraine. This includes visitors from Russia, China, India, and most Middle Eastern countries. A visa and residency permit is required for stays over 90 days, which you must receive in advance at a Ukrainian embassy or consulate, as you cannot get a Ukrainian visa at the airport or at the border.

Verify Your Status

Always check current requirements through Ukraine's official Ministry of Foreign Affairs website or embassy, as visa policies can change. Consider your specific travel purpose, as business, study, or work may require different documentation even for visa-free nationals. Ukraine remains open to foreigners even during martial law, and borders remain open for tourists, though entry is permitted only through land border crossing points with proper documentation.

03

Ukraine Visa Types and Categories

Ukraine offers various visa categories designed to accommodate different travel purposes and durations. Understanding the specific requirements and conditions for each visa type ensures you select the most appropriate option for your intended activities.

Transit Visas

Transit visas (Type B) permit stopovers up to 5 days for each transit period through Ukraine. These can be issued as single, double, or multiple entry visas valid for a maximum of 1 year or longer depending on supporting documents. You need to provide onward travel documentation such as visas for your destination country and tickets.

Short-Term Tourist and Business Visas

Short-term visas (Type C) allow stays up to 90 days within every 180-day period. Type C visas are issued as single, double, or multiple entry visas valid for 6 months or another period depending on supporting documents but cannot be issued for more than a 5-year term. Type C visas include two subtypes: C 01 (business visa) and C 02 (private visa). These accommodate tourism, business meetings, conferences, negotiations, private visits, and cultural activities. Both categories require accommodation confirmation, invitation letters from Ukrainian entities or individuals, and financial proof.

Electronic Visas

From February 2025, foreigners from 42 countries can apply for an e-Visa for a single or double visit to Ukraine for up to 30 days. The cost is 20 USD for single-entry and 30 USD for double-entry with decisions within 3 business days. Urgent processing is available for double the visa fee (40 USD or 60 USD) with decisions within 1 business day. Electronic visas cover tourism, business, private visits, medical treatment, journalism, and cultural or sporting events.

Long-Term Visas

Long-term visas (Type D) are issued to foreigners who intend to apply for a temporary residence permit to stay in Ukraine for more than 90 days. Type D visas are issued as multiple entry visas valid for 90 days, during which you must apply for a temporary residence permit. These visas are required for work, study, family reunification, and other long-term purposes.

Work and Employment Visas

Work visas require a certified copy of the work permit issued by Ukraine's State Centre for Employment, or for certain foreigners exempt from this requirement, a copy of the work contract. Work permits are typically valid for 1 year, or up to 3 years for certain high-skilled roles. If the work permit application is approved, the permit is typically issued for a period of up to three years, depending on the job category. After obtaining the Type D visa and entering Ukraine, you must apply for a temporary residence permit that authorizes both residence and employment.

Student and Academic Visas

Student visas support enrollment in accredited Ukrainian educational institutions and require an original letter of invitation from the Ukrainian State Center for International Education. Academic exchange visas facilitate research collaborations and educational partnerships. Both require official acceptance letters and financial sustainability documentation.

Family and Special Purpose Visas

Family reunion visas enable visits to Ukrainian relatives or spouses with appropriate relationship documentation such as marriage certificates. Diplomatic and official visas serve government representatives. Humanitarian workers and religious personnel may apply for special-purpose residence permits through sponsoring organizations.

Ukraine's embassies and consulates abroad charge 65 USD (basic visa fee) for processing visa applications via regular service. Fees are doubled for all applications filed upon expedited service. Visas are issued free of charge to minors. Processing times typically range from 3-15 business days depending on the visa type and processing service selected.
